Bengali filmmaker Anumita Dasgupta, whose directorial debut "Jumeli" is widely appreciated, has been chosen for the award instituted in memory of veteran Malayalam director G Aravindan.

Anumita was chosen for the honour in view of the thematic novelty and effective presentation of her first film, the jury chairman and eminent film maker Shaji N Karun said in a release today.

"Unlike most recent films that focus on certain class of the society, Jumeli portrays the life and struggles of a tribal woman living on the periphery of the society," the jury noted.

The award carries Rs 25,000, citation and memento. The award is instituted in memory of Aravindan, film maker and cartoonist who broke new ground in Malayalam cinema through his highly acclaimed works like "Kanchana Seetha", "Thambu" and "Esthappan." PTI
