I was in awe of Shashi not Shammi: Sharmila
Sharmila Tagore, who started her Bollywood career opposite Shammi Kapoor with 1964 hit 'Kashmir Ki Kali', says she was more in awe of Shashi Kapoor than Shammi but became a fan of the actor after working with him.
"When I was first offered 'Kashmir Ki Kali', although I was excited to work with Shammi, I was not his big fan because I had not seen much of his previous work. I was more impressed by Shashi Kapoor.
"In those days I believe every girl had a crush on him. I remember one day Shashi came on the sets of the movie and I couldn't work... The shooting was stopped because I got so distracted. Then the director (Shakti Samanta) had to ask him to leave," said Sharmila, who was in the capital to attend a retrospective of Shammi Kapoor, who passed away on August 14.
The actress, however, enjoyed working with Shammi on 'Kashmir Ki Kali' and learnt a lot from him.
"He was so spontaneous and full of life. He was very unpredictable... He never came on time on sets but would always complete his work and leave. I am thankful to God that I got my first break opposite such a legend and because of him I am where I am today," said Sharmila, "He made me feel comfortable on the sets and always encouraged me. The kind of acting and craziness he brought to his movies, the youngsters are copying him now. His films were ahead of his time. It was an honour working with him," said Sharmila. PTI
