Jaya Bachchan turns 64 today
The veteran Actress Jaya Bachchan turns 64 (9th April) today. Born to Jabalpur-based, Bengali-speaking Indira and Tarun Kumar Bhaduri, Jaya Bachchan started her acting career when she was 15 in a Bengali film “Mahanagar”. She became an actress in her own right in Bollywood after the release of Guddi. She went on to star in many films, including Jawani Diwani, Uphaar, Anamika, just to name a few.
She acted with her husband Amitabh Bachchan in the hit films Zanjeer, Chupke Chupke and Sholay, proving Superhit at the ox-office, while Abhmaan, Kora Kagaz and Nauakar showered her with Filmfare Best Actress Award.
She married Amitabh Bachchan, who is the legend in B’wood and subsequently gave birth to Shweta and Abhishek.
Her daughter Shweta was born while Jaya and Amitabh were working on the film “Sholay”. Following this she retired from films nd focused on raising her children. Her last film as a lead actress was Silsila in 1981, also opposite her husband after which she stopped acting in movies. During the late 1980s she wrote the story for the film Shahenshah which starred her husband in the lead.
After a gap of film appearances for 18 years, she returned to acting with Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa in 1998. In 2000 she starred n the film Fiza opposite Karisma Kapoor and Hrithik Roshan. The film was considered one of her best performances and she received the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for her work. Doing a few films every year she also starred in Karan Johar's family drama “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham” in 2001 and “Kal Ho Naa Ho” in 2003 claiming her best supporting actress award at Filmfares for both the films.
Her last film was Laaga Chunari Mein Daag where she appeared with son Abhishek Bachchan and actresses Rani Mukerji and onkona Sen Sharma.
Beside her Bollywood journey, Jaya Bachchan too became active in politics, notably with the Samajwadi Party and has been a ember of Parliament, representing Rajya Sabha. Bachchan returned to the Upper House as MP of Samajwadi Party in July 2006. Amitabh Bachchan accompanied her to the swearing-in ceremony.
The daughter of Bengali writer Tarun Bhaduri, wife of Indian megastar Amitabh Bachchan, mother of movie star Abhishek achchan, Jaya Bachchan is now the mother in law of the Miss World and B’wood Actress Aishwariya Rai Bachchan which sets her complete.
