'Viswaroopam' to hit theatres first

Kamal Hassan's plan to release his trilingual "Viswaroopam" on the DTH platform ahead of its release in theatres has received a setback with the movie now hitting the screens first.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting between the actor-director, Tamil Nadu Film Theatres Owners' Association, producer-director Keyar and others at Kamal Hassan's office here.

Association General Secretary R Pannerselvam told reporters after the meeting that the film would hit theatres first. However, the day and date on when it would be released had not been finalised, he said.

"The day and date when it is expected to be released will be decided at the second round of meeting tomorrow (Jan 9)," he said.

Rajkamal Films International had scheduled the release on DTH platform on January 10 at a rate of Rs 1,000 for Tamil version and Rs 500 for the Hindi and Telugu versions.

Soon after Kamal Hassan's decision to release the movie on DTH platform, Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association and Madurai-Ramanathapuram United Film Distributors had threatened to not release it in theatres and asked him to reconsider his decision and cancel licences given to relevant companies for airing it.

Meanwhile, Airtel CEO DTH and Media, Shashi Arora said the company has stopped bookings for the premiere, scheduled for January 10.

"In line with the postponement of the release date of the movie Vishwaroopam (Tamil and Telugu)/Viswaroop (Hindi) across theatres on DTH platform by Rajkamal films, we have stopped taking bookings for the movie premiere," he said.

He said they were awaiting confirmation from Rajkamal films on the revised dates.

Besides Airtel DTH, the movie is expected to be released on Dish TV and Videocon among others.

Viswaroopam has courted controversy with some Muslim outfits demanding it be screened to them prior to its release, expressing concern over the depiction of the community in the movie, which they said portrayed them in "bad light". PTI
